Are You Dealing With Hypermobility?

Is Hypermobility The Cause Of Your Discomfort?

Did you know that hypermobility is a very common condition affecting up to 30% of the population? 70% of those affected are female.

Hypermobility causes your joints to have an unusually large range of motion, allowing them to bend further than normal. You can have this throughout your whole body, or in just one specific joint.

What are the key indicators to look out for?

  • The ability to touch your palms to the floor while standing without bending your knees.
  • Having overly bendy elbows and knees.
  • Experiencing discomfort when sitting normally causing you to want to cross your legs or move around a lot.
  • Having clicky joints.

On the surface there is nothing wrong with being hypermobile, however this extra range can cause joint instability and extra muscle fatigue during activity which can make you more susceptible to injury. In order to reduce the risk it is important to strengthen the extra range. To get you started with this today we have put together a few general exercises for you to do. For each exercise Katie shows you common errors individuals with hypermobility may make, before showing you the correct technique. We recommend practicing these exercises in front of a mirror to ensure you are performing them correctly and staying within normal range. It is important to make sure you feel the exercises in your muscles rather than your joints.

If you have been diagnosed with hypermobility in the past, or it is just all sounding a little bit too familiar we would highly recommend seeing one of our experts to ensure you are doing the correct strengthening for your specific case.
