Who Can Benefit From Sports Massage?
Quite simply everyone. It is a wonderful way to help reduce tension that can build up in muscles. This can occur, as the name suggests, from sports and other activities, however we also build up tension through postures we adopt such as sitting at a desk all day working at a computer.
The sports massage therapist will discuss with you your specific issues and judge the level of pressure to use to help maximise your benefits, so the sessions can be individualised to you.
What Does Sports Massage Involve?
Sports massage primarily uses manual therapy techniques to release tension in soft tissues, including muscles and fascia (tissue which lies within the muscle system). The therapist during the first session will discuss any specific issues you may be having to help them target the right areas and get the best results for you. The majority of the session should be completing the release work, this can be general massage or specific tissue release work depending on your specific requirements.

How Massage
Can Help You
You may not even be aware of how your body has adapted over time. Our bodies constantly adjust to habitual movement patterns (sitting at work) and the way you train which affects all your soft tissues. Your body will naturally change posture, developing imbalances in the muscles and tendons that can influence your ability to perform at your best.
Full body sports massage is your chance to correct these problems before they develop into potential injuries. These can affect your ability to train or continue doing the activities you enjoy the most. The even better news is that with good management before an event you could actually improve your performance by allowing your body to move the way it needs to during activity.
Despite the name ‘Sports Massage’ it is not only those of you that take regular exercise that may be suffering.
Do you feel stressed sitting at your desk all day? Do you generally feel tight through your shoulders or back? Maybe you have noticed you are feeling a little sluggish or tired? There is a simple solution to your problem that is tailored to you as an individual and can positively enhance your life.
Your body builds up muscular tension during normal daily activities and this can then impair the body’s movement patterns. This is often where the problems start for many people; the physical and emotional stresses of life affect movement and create problems. Sports massage helps eliminate these issues and gets you feeling at your best again.
Whatever your current situation our certified sports massage therapists can help create the right environment for you to move and function better during your life.

Sports Massage FAQ's
A sports massage as part of your recovery from surgery or injury is a great addition to maximise your benefits. During both surgery, such as an ACL, or injury, say a back complaint, your body will adapt movement patterns to cope. These patterns do not necessarily return once your pain settles, sports massage is a great way to release this tension and allow your body to achieve the best results.
Sports massage is well placed to help reduce pain and stress. Tension is primarily driven by over active mobiliser muscles, they get tight trying to complete a task they are not well designed to complete. You feel this as tension or tightness, sports massage can allow you access to this movement again and give you the ability to build your stability again. It can be an essential part of your treatment pathway and recovery.
A sports massage can last anything from 30 minutes to 90 minutes depending on your needs. Essentially the short massage will tend to work on one body part, leg or neck only, while once you move to 45 minutes you can cover two areas, and beyond that you can really get into covering all the areas. It will depend on what your needs are, injury specific or general tension release.
