Understanding the issue
In today’s increasingly sedentary and ageing population, hip pain can cause individuals considerable issues. As people continue to live longer, the rate of osteoarthritis, which is a common source of hip pain, is increasing. The rate of total hip replacements is also increasing year on year. In England, the number of hip replacement operations on people aged under 60 has risen 76% in the last decade (Roberts, 2016).

Hip pain can affect people in many ways. It can cause a lack of sleep, change the way you walk and prevent your from living your everyday life. 

Any pain in your hips is best addressed early. Your hip pain should be taken seriously as they are the early warning signs for potential problems down the road. The consequences of not addressing and understanding issues when they arise, can lead to long standing issues that are more complex and harder to settle down. You are in control and can control the progress of your hip with effective treatment and long term management for your issues.

CAUSATIVE FACTORS

There are many causes of hip pain. Hip pain can arise from a change in the bone or soft tissue surrounding the hip. This could be from a specific injury or from an accumulation of factors which have stressed your tissue over time (NHS, 2019). In the UK, the most common cause of hip pain is osteoarthritis. In England it is reported that 1 in 9 adults over 45 years have osteoarthritis of the hip and 1 in 5 adults have osteoarthritis of the knee (Arthritis Research UK, 2019). 

Whether your hip pain has arisen from a specific trauma or over a prolonged period, it is important these symptoms are seen to and taken seriously to avoid further stress and damage. 

Hip pain rarely occurs in isolation, it commonly presents alongside knee pain. Patterns of hip and knee pain are often from complex movement pattern dysfunctions. It is important to understand you should be able to complete any task (picking a pencil off the floor) with a number of different movement patterns, however it is when this choice of movement is lost that repetitive stresses are placed on your soft tissues (muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints). This is when it is likely that problems start to arise.

Unfortunately many people find they drop back into the old habits, this causes a return of the stresses on the soft tissues, which you will now understand relates to a return of symptoms.

Build A Better You

Building your foundation is the key to step 2, to complete this phase we need to identify the underlying movement faults that you have. You have a couple of options here depending on your specific requirements and end goals;

1. Movement Screen 

2. Pilates Discovery Session

3. Running Video Analysis – if running is your thing then this a great way to change the way you move to prevent future issues.

4. Walking  / Rehabilitation Evaluation

You will have the ‘how you move’ identified and explained in full detail to you, and this will allow your movement specialist to plan your next step.

ABOUT RECURRENCE

Did you complete the full treatment pathway?

Recurrence is the toughest area to address in back complaints, primarily if you only completed the first step previously then the chances are you have not changes how the body is moving to prevent recurrence.

PREVENT RECURRENCE

Having removed your pain it is imperative that the reasons for your issue are now addressed. This is where recurrence can be truly prevented. It is the chance to address the core weaknesses, poor movement patterns and understand the habits that might be related to your current problem. It is important that both parties complete the full pathway, this is the area that helps you feel great again.

Just finished a six week massage course with Andrew Walker; have to say that I’ve had many massages before with very little interaction and not knowing what was causing my back problems when I left, but Andrew was very different! I had a running analysis with Andrew at BodyLogicHealth and found it very informative. The idea of dissecting my running style on a big screen was slightly uncomfortable but it turned out very interesting and useful! I have been seeing Alex at Body Logic for around 9 months, rehabilitating my sports injury and have had excellent treatment so far. Everyone is very friendly, the gym equipment is good quality and the physios are extremely knowledgeable and supportive. I also had a running analysis session with another physio which was a really great experience. I am almost fully recovered and with the help that Alex that has given me I am hoping to be able to hike to Everest Base camp in a couple of months time.
