Quickly Test the Cause of Your Neck Pain

Is Your Neck Pain Muscle or Joint Related?

Neck pain is a common issue in today’s world, often caused by prolonged screen time, whether on computers or phones. Our head is the heaviest part of the body, and when it falls forward due to poor posture, it places excessive strain on the neck and shoulders. Over time, this can lead to stiffness, tightness, and discomfort. The earliest warning signs are muscle tension and restricted movement, especially after a long day at a desk. If left unaddressed, this muscle tightness can eventually contribute to joint wear and tear, making movement more difficult and painful.

A simple way to assess your neck pain is by testing your range of motion. Try rotating your head from side to side and note any restrictions. Then, relax your shoulder by supporting your elbow with your opposite hand and rotate again. If your movement improves, the issue is likely muscle-related and can be improved with stretching and mobility exercises. If there’s no change, the restriction may be joint-related and require more targeted treatment. Addressing muscle tightness early on can help prevent long-term joint problems, reducing the risk of chronic pain and stiffness.
