Shock wave therapy (ESWT) can help with both acute and chronic pain issues and has an increasingly wide range of issues that it can assist your progress with. Pain can make life difficult and affects our ability to do the activities we enjoy, this can be increasingly problematic with issues that respond slowly to treatment such as tendinopathies. ESWT can be an integral part of your treatment pathway to help you achieve the best results. It is important that you integrate the potential of ESWT with your full rehabilitation programme for the very best results.
Shock wave therapy has research success rates from 60% to 80% in tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff tendinopathies, Achilles tendinopathy and jumper’s knee through a regenerative and tissue-repairing effect on musculoskeletal tissue.’
– Notarnicola & Moretti 2012
This treatment modality can help with pain management while kick starting your healing process and get you back on the right track with your recovery. The shock waves are high energy sound waves which are transmitted to the affected area to accelerate your recovery, to get you out of pain faster. The treatment increases the blood flow to the region, decreases localised pain and helps stimulate cell regeneration, which encourages the healing process allowing the body to repair. The sound waves can also help to break down damaged tissue and calcifications.
The good news for you as a client is that it is a safe treatment method, being recognised by NICE guidance (evidence-based recommendations planned by independent committees) and has been used for over 40 years now. It is worth noting that depending on your injury there can be some discomfort with the treatment however this should be at a tolerable level and will be managed and discussed with your therapist.
Generally you will need between three to six sessions to achieve the changes required to allow your rehabilitation programme to move forwards and maximise your gains, you will need to be reviewed by your therapist, who will also check and progress your training programme. The healing process can continue to progress for about two to three months after your final treatment, although sometimes a second course may be useful following this period for more chronic issues.
