Understanding Your Lower Back Pain As A Golf Injury
More people than ever before are playing golf, with age not being a limiting factor, it is a fantastic sport to get into. However, as with any sports, injuries can occur and as with any sport it is important to understand the biomechanics the body uses to then be able to properly diagnose and treat the injury.
The most common golf injuries are to the lower back. This is mainly due to the action of the golf swing that results in an injury. The two main causes of the injuries can be due to an incorrect golf swing or the action of the golf swing being repeated frequently.
Firstly, an incorrect golf swing results from the biomechanics of the body overcompensating for areas in the swing action. Donât worry, we know this sounds confusing and terminal. It is not. This can be easily treated with initially getting you out of pain, then building up your strength especially in the right areas to help prevent injury. This will then all aid in you retraining your golf swing to not only prevent the lower back injury reoccurring, but it can also help with improving swing power and accuracy.
Secondly, if the causative factor for your lower back pain is from the frequency of the golf swing, which may come across as âYou play too much golfâ (which is always false and you should never believe such a thing). This showcases that your muscles which you predominately use in your golf swing, such as your core and glutes, are fatiguing. Once your muscles fatigue this can cause other muscles to engage, leading to injuries. None the less, this can be solved. As always, we get you out of pain with specialist and personalised hands-on treatment and exercises. Once you are out of pain, the next step is to build your strength and endurance. This will be through a tailored exercise plan, personalised to how you move whilst also making it attainable for yourself.
